Career Meaning & Purpose

I’ve been unemployed from my corporate biotech job for nearly a year. The company needed to restructure to cut $100M in costs. Since I have a PhD and experience in marketing, sales, and business, lots of companies want to hire me, calling me a “unicorn.” That is until they read my writing. Last year I published my article, “Racism: Effective Business Strategy or Anachronism. A Cost-Benefit Analysis of Systemic Prejudice in Modern Global Economies.”

Career decisions should be reframed as choosing which tradeoffs you are willing to accept, rather than seeking a perfect job without downsides.

I got into my first job interview after being unemployed for 7 months. I lied about my illness, which was the reason why I left my job. During the interview, the HR keeps on questioning why I took that career break and they want me to elaborate on what made me leave.

Instead of pursuing overwhelming, grand life goals, find purpose by being fully present and focusing on serving the people and tasks immediately in front of you. Meaning is discovered through small, consistent acts of presence rather than high-pressure ambitions.
