8 Best Online CNA Classes and Hybrid Programs (2026)

Last updated: October 20, 2026. Program details were checked on official program pages, federal regulations, state workforce listings, and published guides on this date. We have no affiliate relationship with any program on this list, and none paid to be included.

Becoming a certified nursing assistant is one of the fastest ways into healthcare: most programs take four to twelve weeks, and some cost you nothing. But there is a catch hidden in almost every "online CNA class" ad. Federal rules require hands-on clinical training under a nurse's supervision, so no legitimate CNA program is 100% online.

What you can do online is the classroom part. We compared hybrid and online-theory CNA programs on cost and funding, state approval, how much is online, clinical placement support, and track record. Eight made the cut, including ways to get trained for free. Below you will find what each one costs, what you do online versus in person, and which fits your situation.

How we ranked these programs

Every CNA program must be approved by your state, so we focused on approved programs that put as much of the classroom work online as the rules allow. We also included employer-sponsored training, because it is the most common way to get trained for free.

Can you really take CNA classes online?

Partly. Under federal rules, every state-approved nurse aide program must include at least 75 hours of training, with at least 16 hours of supervised practical training performed on real people under a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. About half the states require more hours than the federal minimum. So the classroom part can often be online, but the clinical part always happens in person.

Part of trainingOnline?Notes
Classroom theoryOften yesSelf-paced or live online, depending on the program and state
Skills labUsually in personPracticing skills on classmates or mannequins
Supervised clinical hoursNoAt least 16 hours under a nurse, often in a nursing home or hospital
State competency examNoWritten and skills test after training

How to get CNA training for free. Federal rules say a nurse aide who is employed by, or has a job offer from, a nursing facility when training starts cannot be charged for any part of the program, including books. If you pay for training yourself and are hired by a nursing facility within 12 months, you are eligible for reimbursement, as the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reconfirmed in April 2026. Laid-off workers can also ask an American Job Center about WIOA funding.

Is CNA work a safe bet in the AI era?

CNA work is hands-on care for people, which makes it one of the jobs least likely to be automated. In May 2025 there were about 1.45 million nursing assistants in the US, with a median wage of $42,260, and BLS expects about 204,100 openings a year as the population ages. The pay is modest, but many CNAs use the role as a first step toward becoming an LPN or RN.
